Description: The Luther College archaeological field school is part of a broader
research plan designed to investigate the prehistoric record of indigenous groups in northeast
Iowa. The scenic Upper Iowa Valley is unique in the Upper Midwest
in that it contains a long cultural continuity that extends into
the historic period. Occupations in the valley extend back at least 10,000 years and etends beyond the the arrival of Europeans in the late seventeenth century. Our field work will likely encompass occupations that are associated with much of this time span.

The goal for the 2008 field season will be to conduct survey and excavations at several locations in the Upper Iowa valley. Our goal is to broaden our knowledge of the rich prehistoric period in northeast Iowa through the discovery of new archaeological sites and the recovery of information from existing sites. In the process of investigating this research topic, students will
be become proficient in a wide range of skills. Planned field activities
include reconnaissance, survey, and excavation with exposure to
a range of different recovery strategies.
Instruction will be given
in site mapping using a Nikon total station, Sokkia data collector, and Trimble GeoXT GPS field computer.
All of the participants will also learn laboratory processing and
basic analysis procedures, including the processing of flotation
samples using a Dausman flotation machine.
Location:
The field school will be based at the Anthropology Laboratory on
the Luther College campus in Decorah, Iowa. We will commute to the
sites from campus on a daily basis. Transportation is included in the tuition. Participants typically either
arrange accomodations in Luther College dorms or rental properties
in Decorah.
