In 2000, Professor Colin Betts introduced the hobby of spearthrowing to Luther College. Ever since, making and using spearthrowers, or atlatls, has been a popular hobby for Luther students and faculty. Luther College hosts two annual events, Opochtli's Challenge and the Decorah Open, and travels to a third event at Grinnell each spring. Many students have made their own atlatls and darts, and a few students have even researched the physics and function of the atlatl.
